KT Lane O’brien is teaching a Sculptural Painting Series at The Refuge in Lowell MA, starting in early August.
Sculptural Painting (Fun for all ages!)
Instructor: Katie O’Brien
In this course, students will be using traditional methods of collage and paint, in conjunction with sculptural materials, to create a form that functions as a 2D and a 3D piece of art. Participants will form a more critical eye for the colorful environments around them, while learning more about how the dynamics of gravity can add to their work. Additionally, a special focus will be placed on exploring the benefits of embracing the balance of control and chance into their artistic practice.
8/4, 8/5, 8/11, 8/12
10am – 1pm
No prerequisite required. Dress for class expecting to get messy! ALL MATERIALS PROVIDED… personal sketchbooks or notepads are encouraged!
Katie Lane O’Brien received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from a small program at the New England School of Art and Design at Suffolk University where her love of all things paint was fostered and explored at an intimate individual level. Her journey has led her through various genres from large scale abstracts to photo realism. Most days, Katie can be found in her studio experimenting with different ways to make a mess, playing with different textures, and making off-the-wall paintings.
Her work can be found at www.kt-lane.com or on her Instagram @terriblepainteater

Live in the Boston area? Artist Stephanie Todhunter, of Jerome Street Studios in West Medford, and I are working on offering a cyanotype workshop. Stephanie is providing the space and I will teach. We have not set a date yet, waiting to see how much interest there is. Since we need sunlight for this class, attendees will have to be willing to be flexible on when it will be held. Once we have enough people wanting to take the workshop we can set dates. Below is the course description. – Susan Murie
Learn the Art of Cyanotypes with Artist Susan Murie.
In this intensive workshop you will learn the history and how-to behind the fascinating cyanotype printing process. Susan will demonstrate how to prepare paper and make and process prints. She will also share tips for getting the best results. Price includes all materials and you will go home with additional coated paper to expose, a sheet of 11″x14″ plexiglass with backing and a supplier list. You are also welcome to bring large black and white negatives, flowers and other objects.
Susan Murie is a Boston area artist. Her work was recently shown at Art@Freepoint x Maud Morgan Arts and The Curated Fridge. She is an artist in the 2018 Community Supported Art program in Cambridge.
This 3 hour workshop is WEATHER DEPENDENT. We need to have a sunny day so the prints will be able to develop properly. If you would be interested in taking this workshop, please contact me. Once we have 4-6 interested people, we will set up a series of dates that work for everyone (ie first choice, second rain day, third rain day). This type of workshop is rarely offered due to the logistics- but I’m extremely excited about the possibility.
