Trying to photograph your art. ie, another way to waste 6 hours…

Glare and bad tone…

I spent the morning trying to photograph several paintings and the results are frustrating.  It seems I have to choose between good lighting with glare or poor lighting with no glare and then poor quality.  I have had some success with taking photos on a overcast day against a white wall, but the light still wasn’t strong enough.  I’m thinking about building a diy lightbox for the smaller paintings, but I still won’t have a solution for the bigger ones.  Does anyone have any experience with this issue?  My paintings are heavily varnished, so glare seems to be the biggest problem.  It isn’t economically feasible for me to have them professionally photographed either (unfortunately).
